When it comes to our furry companions, we always want what’s best for them, and that includes the food they eat. Making sure your dog receives the best type of food allows them to stay healthy and active. In this particular article, we’ll be going over some of the best dog food for  toy poodles.

Toy poodles are a beautiful breed, and with such beauty requires a great deal of attention and care. To maintain their beauty and health, toy poodles (and all other dog breeds) need to receive proper nutrition depending on their size and activity level. To give your toy poodle the proper nutrition they need, there are quite a few things you need to know, so let’s get right into it.

Your Type Of Poodle

As you probably know, poodles come in all shapes and sizes. It’s important to understand which type of poodle you have and whether it will stay within the “toy” category. Here are thethree general classifications of poodles:

  1. Toy Poodles:Toy poodles are the smallest size of the classifications and they typically weigh under 10 lbs.
  2. Miniature Poodles:Miniature poodles are in between the classifications, but they typically aren’t much bigger than toy poodles. Mini poodles usually weigh between 10 and 20 lbs.
  3. Standard Poodles:Standard poodles are the largest of the classifications. They can weigh anywhere between 21 and over 60 lbs.

Learn how big your poodle will grow by talking to your breeder or a veterinarian so that you can properly plan your poodle’s diet over time should it grow larger into the other classifications. For the remainder of this article, we’ll only be talking about toy poodles in particular.

Choosing Food Based On Age

As your toy poodle ages, the type of food formulated for them will have to change. Older toy poodles require different levels of macronutrients, micronutrients and calories. Here are the three food formulations for different age groups:

  1. Puppy Toy Poodles:If your puppy is under a year old, the best food formulated for them is “puppy food” or “growth food.” These types of food are designed for baby poodles to help them grow as they have more protein content, higher calorie levels and calcium.
  2. Adult Toy Poodles: Adult toy poodles are between 1 and 7 years of age. The food formulated should be designed for adults, providing them with a well-balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs.
  3. Senior Toy Poodles: The older toy poodles beyond 7 years need a complete & balanced diet food that’s formulated for them. Usually has reduced levels of minerals; these are better for their old age as it helps reduce the stress on their kidneys.

Nutritional And Feeding Guidelines For Toy Poodles

Planning your toy poodle’s nutritional intake is pretty easy. Once you choose the food formulation appropriate for their age and understand the nutrition they need, the only thing you need to keep track of is how their body responds to the food.

Whenever you decide to change your toy poodle’s food, it needs to be done transitionally. If you started with food A and are planning to move to food B, here’s how you do it:

Day 1:Feed 90% of food A, 10% food B.

Day 2:Feed 80% of food A, 20% food B.

Day 3:Feed 70% of food A, 30% food B.

Continue switching 10% of the old food with the new food every day and monitor how your poodle responds to it. If your poodle has any negative reactions, you should consult with your vet immediately.

If your toy poodle grows from a smaller size e.g. 4-5 lbs to a larger size of 8-9 lbs, you simply increase theamountof food you feed. We’ll talk about how much food to feed your toy poodle later on.

So, What Type Of Nutrition Does Your Toy Poodle Need?

  1. Protein:Protein is a key ingredient for puppy poodles to grow strong and healthy. Since toy poodles have lean muscles, the protein will help feed their muscles to help them grow and stay strong. As your toy poodle ages into its adultand senior years, reduced protein content should be fed. The best type of protein to feed your toy poodle are those found from natural resources such as meat.
  2. Omega 3 and Omega 6 Fatty Acids:Because we all love how adorable our toy poodles look, we want to maintain their beautiful coat and skin. These omegas help maintain a healthy and shiny coat and skin. Animal fat is also a key nutrient for toy poodles as it increases their energy levels.
  3. Carbohydrates and Fiber:Carbs are great for providing toy poodles with energy throughout the day. However, only a small portion of their diet should contain carbs. Fiber is essential for your toy poodle’s diet as it helps keep their gastrointestinal system working properly.
  4. Vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and probiotics:Added vitamins and minerals are great for your poodle as some essential nutrients are lost when cooking food for them. To help keep our toy poodle healthy, antioxidants and probiotics will support their liver function, boost their immune system and overall natural defenses against viruses and diseases.

Puppies should be fed more frequently in smaller portions. Feed them four small portions a day until they reach three months of age.
